Barcelona - Gaudi - 2003

The Modernistas transformed this block of Barcelona into something so riotous it was called Block of Discord.
Block of Discord
Street level view of Gaudi's Casa Battlo, a fanciful apartment building on the Block of Discord

Windows in Casa Battlo.
Casa Battlo windows
Another view of the Casa Battlo facade. If it looks like a face, it was probably intended to be.

We didn't actually go on the tour of Casa Battlo, but we could see the stairs through the front door.
Inside Casa Battlo
We did tour the Casa Mila, usually referred to as La Pedrera
Pedrera facade
The Pedrera was actually used as an apartment building - there's the apartment balconies!
Pedrera balconies
There are actually 3 courtyards in this building - this is the one with the main lobby at the bottom of it.
Pedrera - main courtyard
Pedrera front door - looking out from the lobby.

The attic has been made into a museum with architectural models and slideshows. Just the room itself is cool.
Pedrera attic museum
Notice how Gaudi's style, radical though it was, borrows from traditional cathedrals and monasteries

On the left, the basic building underlying the Casa Battlo. On the right, with facade and dragon roof .

The top apartment has been restored and furnished gorgeous Art Nouveau furnishings, art, and historical artifacts.
Pedrera - the apartment
Running around on the roof is the best part of the Pedrera tour!
Pedrera rooftop
Pedrera courtyard from the roof. I love the way the windows look like eyelids.
Pedrera - courtyard from the top
It just goes on and on - stairs and ramps and insane
Pedrera rooftop - levels
Everybody takes this shot. Some call 'em chimneys, some call 'em soldiers.
Pedrera helmet heads
More goofy chimneys.
Pedrera - more chimneys
From the roof of the Pedrera you can see the next stop on the Gaudi itinerary - the Sagrada Familia Cathedral.

The Sagrada Familia Cathedral - aerial view.
Sagrada Familia - aerial
Sagrada Familia from just outside the main gate. As the crane suggests, it is still under construction.
Sagrada Familia - main gate
There are words written all over the building, often worked into the design so you hardly notice them.
Sagrada Familia - sanctus sanctus sanctus
We're zooming in on the nativity facade - an earth day riot of plants, animals, angels and the Holy Family.
Sagrada Familia - Nativity Facade
Nativity facade. Plant material. Words.
Sagrada Familia - Nativity Facade
It is a church, after all, and what's a church without stained glass?
Sagrada Familia - stained glass
Yikes! It's a band of angels. Doing what bands do - playing instruments.
Sagrada Familia - Nativity Facade
What can you say? It's indescribable.
Sagrada Familia - Nativity Facade
When looked at up close, some of the spires turn out to be bowls of fruit. Weird.
Sagrada Familia - fruit tops
In case you hadn't noticed, this cathedral is still under construction.
Sagrada Familia - under construction
It was started in 1888, and they have high hopes of finishing it sometime in the next 15 years.
Sagrada Familia - construction
Remember the tree-like branching of the pillars in that Cistercian abbey in Poblet? Here it is in modernista guise.
Sagrada Familia - arches
This facade was done by another architect after Gaudi's death in a very different style.
Sagrada Familia - Passion Facade
Shades of El Greco! This side of the cathedral is a lot spookier than the other facade.
Sagrada Familia - Passion facade
Still has that off-kilter organic look the Modernistas favored, but without all the vegetation and birds and turtles.
Sagrada Familia - Passion Facade
A view from the top is not to be missed. An elevator takes you partway - then you have to climb.
Sagrada Familia - staircase
One set of spires viewd from the other set.
Sagrada Familia - spires from roof
You really can't appreciate the spires properly until you get up here. The white lettering says
Sagrada Familia - spire tops
Really closeup view of the mosaics on the spires. There's the bottom of the

And back down the stairs again.
